Harperings

Here are the songs I have written and performed as a Harper, before I Impressed to green Kyrith.

Cinda's Song

The young man sits down on a stool after a nod to the Harpers behind him. He sets a gitar across his lap, and puts the pipes to his lips. Softly, he begins to play, slowly blowing across the pipes, emitting a sad, haunting sound.

Slowly the other Harpers pick up there instruments, and, one by one, begin to pick up the song.

Gradually, the sad music picks up in speed as the pipes soar to new heights, screeching on taut nerves causing the strongest to wince.

Soon the melody of the pipes and the counter melody of the other intruments combine to form one strong sad melody, filling the room with a sea of pain.

Gently, the young harper sets down his pipes, letting the melody carry for a while before picking up the gitar across his lap.

Slowly, he begins to strum the gitar, weaving its notes in and out of the melody, each chord sounding like a laugh awash in a sea of tears.

Persistently, the gitar's notes weave in and out of the sad melody, catching each instrument and guiding it, persuading it along.

One by one, the other instruments take up the new melody, gradually slowing, sounding tenative now, afraid.

Soon the persistence of the gitar weaving through them, caressing the sound of each like a gentle lover, pulling them along.

Sound fills the room, the sound of a crowd after impression, suprised, filled with joy, new joy, joy never before known.

One by one, the instruments fade away, until only the sound of the gitar is left. The young Harper's fingers dancing over it, playing softly, sweetly.

As the music fades, the harper looks up, smiling at the audience through his tears.

The wife song:

Teron strums his instrument softly, slowly, almost idly, as he looks up to the
sky, then down at the audience.

Smiling, he speaks, "I learned this song from the Harper who lived at my Hold.
He said he got it from a Harper who got it from....." he grins, "You get the
idea."

Starting to play, a slow, almost sad melody, "Legend has it, that this song
isn't a Pernese song, that it came from Terra, with the Colonists. I think
the names were changed though." he grins.

Grinning, he starts sing, in a slow, soft voice.

Maybe some day I'll go back again to Benden,
If my dear old wife would only pass away.
She nearly has my heart broooooke with her naggin'
She's got a mouth as big as Nerat Bay.

Chuckling, he checks the audience's reaction to the first verse. Smiling
softly he begins the second.

See her drinking 16 pints of Telgar's Finest,
And then she can walk home without a sway,
If the sea was ale instead of sa-a-lty water,
She would live and die in Nerat Bay.

Smiling at the audience with a silly grin, he launches into the final
verse.

On her back she has painted a map of Pern,
And when she takes her bath each sevenday,
She rubs the sweetsand scrub around by Ruath,

He takes a deep breath, and sings the final line, with a grand flourish

Just to watch the suds flow down by Nerat Baaay!

He smiles at the audience, and waits for the fruit.
